The other versions are out there to compare, but the differences aren't always better, some of the most complained about lines that are "missing" were not part of the original to begin with, but anomalies of localisation taken too far. I think you'll get value from seeing the Netflix version, both sub and dub, as a first viewing. It is odd seeing people regard it's worst moments and errors as "iconic", but I guess some have not seen the alternatives and were born too late to know what was wrong with it. I suspect that Gainax/Khara would not have wanted that mistake repeated (it seems the new translation is done in-house, not by Netflix). It was very controversial at the time and caused much outrage (I can't stand to watch it to this day). I'm looking forward to see if End of Evangelion does as well, as the 2002 English dub was disrespectful to the creators and had some truly awful moments. It's an attempt at faithful translation without spurious Americanisations and it works well for the most part (so far). Shinji's character is no longer misrepresented as whiney. I'm up to Ep.20 with the new dub and see no major problems except Fuyutsuki mispronounced and the odd awkward but correct phrase. Yet, memorable and exciting as well, a certain synergy of its own.
